Training gardeners of the future is one of the most important things at Great Dixter

The spirit of generosity that is so often associated with Great Dixter is interwoven with the scholarship and placement opportunities. The highly skilled team of horticulturists led by Fergus in the garden and Michael in the nursery, push the boundaries of propagation and ornamental gardening. The culture of experimentation, founded by Christopher Lloyd and cemented by Fergus, mean practices are questioned and more creative, sustainable and biodiverse-friendly ways of working are sought. This environment creates a very special place to train, where people are supported, and worked with as individuals- and leave with a responsibility to share their new-found knowledge with others.

A year-long Christopher Lloyd Scholarship costs in the region of £40,000.  They are paid the minimum wage and live in subsidised accommodation on site.  The plan is to try to raise £240,000 to safeguard Great Dixter’s ability to continue providing these training opportunities for the next few years.
