The Wall Garden
Great Dixter’s garden in Christopher Lloyd’s words.
A rectangle of walls which causes destructive wind eddies and vortices. The protection they afford is largely in the imagination. The central rectangular lawn was replaced by paving, in 1998, which includes a pebble mosaic of my two dachshunds, Dahlia and Canna.
The work was executed by Maggie Howarth and her assistant, Mark Davidson. The design was Miles Johnson’s, a family friend. The stones comprising Canna’s eye and nose were given to me from the late Derek Jarman’s highly original garden at Prospect Cottage, Dungeness.
